Is my car rental covered?

Many clients will be traveling to go skiing or to warm sunny locations to get away from the cold.  Our agents get calls all the time asking about car rental coverage.  Here are a few questions you should ask yourself.  This way when you are standing at the car rental counter you can make the best decision for you and or your family.

Questions you should know the answers to prior to renting a vehicle:
  1. Where are you traveling?  If you are traveling in the United States or Canada you are covered, but if you are traveling abroad your auto insurance will not be covered.   In this case you will want to purchase insurance coverage for the rental vehicle.
  2. Do you have comprehensive and collision on your car?  If so, you most likely do not need to purchase additional insurance from the rental car agency.  However, there can be gaps in coverage so it’s always a good idea to consult with your insurance agent.
  3. Who will be driving the rental vehicle?  Anyone who is driving the rental car needs to be listed as the “driver” on the rental car agreement.  If you are planning on having more than one driver, then they will also need to be listed.  A driver that is not listed on the agreement does not have permission to drive the car.  It is important to remember that your own personal auto policy only covers drivers who are listed on your policy.   If you are traveling with a friend, their own auto policy should cover them in the event of an accident.
