13 Nov Great Warm Drinks for Fall/Winter
When cold weather starts becoming an everyday occurrence as it does this time of year, wrapping your hands around a warm mug of something delicious can make you feel good all over. While coffee and tea are great, sometimes you might want a little something different. Here are a few warm drinks to try this fall and winter:
- Warm Horchata– horchata is made by grinding rice and almonds and soaking them in water with cinnamon sticks overnight. An easy way to make warm horchata is to soak ¼ cup ground rice, 1 cup ground almonds, and 2 cinnamon sticks in 2 cups of water overnight. The next day, remove the cinnamon sticks and blend the mixture in a blender until very smooth. Add another 2 cups of water and strain the mixture through cheesecloth. Add a ½ tsp vanilla and between 1/3-1/2 cup sugar to taste. Heat the horchata slightly and pour into cups topping with cinnamon.
- Savory Turmeric Tea– sometimes you want something warm, but not something sweet. Add about a tsp each of turmeric and cinnamon to a pan of 2 cups of water. Throw in a pinch of clove and a pinch of nutmeg. Boil for 10 minutes and then strain the tea through cheesecloth. Turmeric is said to have many health benefits as well as being delicious.
- Apple Cider Hot Toddy– Heat a quart of apple cider in a saucepan with 2-3 cloves, a tsp of cinnamon, and a few orange zests. Remove from heat and cover to let steep about 10 minutes. Separate into mugs with about 1 oz of your favorite whiskey or rum in each mug. Garnish with a slice of orange and a cinnamon stick.
