Medical Alternatives and Your Health Insurance

Medical Alternatives and Your Health Insurance

When you have a cold or feel under the weather, do you automatically contact your doctor or do you like to stick it out and see if you can get better on your own?  If you choose the latter, what helps you make that decision?  For some, the thought of going to the doctor for medication may not seem like the natural thing to do.  But taking a holistic approach by seeking alternatives might not even enter your mind because of the cost.

Thankfully, most health insurance carriers have opened their coverage to medical alternatives like:

  • Chiropractic care – regular back adjustments can help chronic pain sufferers get relief and stave off additional health-related problems.
  • Acupuncture/acupressure – proven to be a very helpful tool in reducing chronic pain and releasing stress from trigger points in the body.
  • Massage therapy – is also a wonderful therapy to reduce muscle spasms, stress, and other health issues.
  • Gym memberships – maintaining a healthy body by having a regular exercise regimen can help keep a lot of illnesses away

Having the choice to visit health care providers that may not necessarily be MDs can be a great way to get and keep people healthy. Health insurance carriers know this and have been getting on board with it for a few years now. Not every carrier does this yet, but there is certainly a chance that your carrier does participate in alternative medicine coverage.

In some cases, you may need a prescription from your primary care physician in order to have coverage for these types of medical alternatives. And you will want to discuss your plans with your health insurance carrier as well before making an appointment. You will want to make sure you have the coverage you think you have beforehand. Best of health to you!
