Winter Activities for Boaters

Winter Activities for Boaters

Fishing

If part of your love for boating includes your love of fishing, there’s still fish out there to catch during the winter! If you’ve never tried ice fishing, don’t knock it before you try it. There are plenty of ice fishing spots in New England that you can take advantage of, and we bet you’ll have more fun than you would expect!

Take a Boating Vacation

If cold weather just isn’t your thing, why not take a vacation to some of the best, warm-weather destinations for boat enthusiasts?

Fort Lauderdale, Florida is a favorite for many boat enthusiasts for its year-round warm weather, 300 miles of waterways, 100 marinas and over 40,000 yachts. The nearby Everglades is something that everyone must see at least once in their lives, and there are so many fun excursions in the area. Lake Havasu, Arizona is another favorite for the beautiful weather, its proximity to Las Vegas, and the 60-mile network of waterways it’s connected to.

If you’re looking for the tropical getaway of your dreams, Maui, Hawaii could be just the place you’re looking for. It’s far enough away to feel like you’re worlds away from home while not having to travel to a foreign country. Nature’s beauty is on show in Hawaii, and you can’t go wrong booking a sailing trip around the islands.

Maritime Museums

The US has some incredible maritime museums, both close to home and farther away. If you’re saving up your vacation time and money for trips later this year, then you don’t have to travel far to visit some incredible maritime museums. The Mystic Seaport Museum is home to many beautiful historic vessels, and you can even cruise down the Mystic River if you’re up for it. In Groton, the Submarine Force Museum is home to The Nautilus. Admission and parking are free, but donations are gratefully accepted. In New London, The New London Maritime Society and The U.S. Coast Guard are both wealths of maritime knowledge, and the U.S. Coast Guard is currently working on building a brand new museum in the area. If you’re looking to venture out of Southeastern CT, the USS Constitution Museum in Boston, MA is a beautiful and highly educational experience for anyone who loves maritime heritage and naval history.

Visit our Local Parks & Beaches

Fort Trumbull State Park in New London, CT and Fort Griswold State Park in Groton, CT are both known for their gorgeous views or the Thames River and for their maritime and naval significance to the area. Harkness Memorial State Park is gorgeous year-round, offering panoramic views of the Waterford, CT coastline, and has the added bonus of being far less crowded in the winter months than in warm weather.

Attend a Boat Show

During the winter months, there are so many boating expos that you can attend to get your boating fix and get ready for warmer weather! One of our favorites is Thayer’s Marine’s Fishing Boat Expo in Norwich, CT. It’s local to the area, provides a more one-on-one experience with vendors and experts, and supports business in our local community. This year, the Fishing Boat Expo takes place on Saturday, March 21, 2020, from 9 AM – 4 PM at Thayer’s Marine, 14 Falls Ave, Norwich, CT 06360.

If you still have the boating itch, we suggest calling your SAVA agent at 860-437-7282 to review your boat policy and ensure that you have all the coverage you need to get out there this summer and enjoy every minute!
